Operating across Australia, The Ghan and Indian Pacific trains take travellers to parts of Australia that no other holiday can match. The Great Southern Rail team wanted a way to showcase these incredible experiences to visitors at trade shows and events. Using augmented reality, Lateral Vision was able to simulate the trains travelling across Australia, letting users view the experience on a tabletop in front of them using the Microsoft Hololens.

The Hololens allows imagery to be mapped onto surfaces, giving users the ability to move around the simulation in front of them. Satellite imagery was used for the various environments, adding height and displacement to give the perspective of a 3D landscape from a 2D plane. Accurate, fully optimised, low poly models of the trains were created to bring the whole project to life, including small texture details such as scratches and accumulated dirt. Lastly, a video and voice over tell the story of the journey, as the 3D models, terrain and environment update along the way
